George Balanchine was one of the most influential choreographers of the twentieth century and is widely regarded as a revolutionary figure who gave ballet a decisive impetus towards new choreographic thinking. Although Balanchine did not visit Berlin particularly often, he came to the city in 1969 to stage Symphony in C at the Deutsche Oper. Since then, his works have remained a fixture of ballet repertoires, including in East Berlin.
