Martin Gebhardt

Profile

Martin Gebhardt was a lighting designer and lighting master at the Hamburg Ballett John Neumeier. Since 2002, he worked with Heinz Spoerli and the Ballett Zürich. Productions from both companies led him to renowned theatres in Europe, Asia, and America. At the Opernhaus Zürich, he created the lighting design for productions directed by Jürgen Flimm, Grischa Asagaroff, Matthias Hartmann, David Pountney, Moshe Leiser, Damiano Michieletto, Achim Freyer, and Jan Phillip Gloger. He also designed the lighting for La Bohème and a new version of Death and the Maiden at the Salzburg Festival. He collaborated with Christoph Marthaler and Anna Viebrock on Handel's Sale, Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims, and Gluck's Orfeo et Euridice in Zurich, as well as on Lulu at the Staatsoper Hamburg. In 2020, he handled the lighting for Les Huguenots at the Geneva Opera, directed by Jossi Wieler. Recently, he has worked as a lighting designer for choreographers including Edward Clug, Alexei Ratmansky, Marco Goecke, Douglas Lee, Craig Davidson, Juliano Nunes, Goyo Montero, and Marcos Morau.
He has a close collaboration with choreographer Christian Spuck, contributing to productions such as Anna Karenina, Woyzeck, The Sandman, Sonett, Cassiopeia's Garden, Leonce & Lena, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, Winterreise, The Little Match Girl, Sleeping Beauty, Orlando, Monteverdi, Lontano, and Messa da Requiem. Since the 2012/13 season, Martin Gebhardt has been the head of lighting at the Opernhaus Zürich.
