Iwan Borodulin

Profile

Russian countertenor Ivan Borodulin first studied at the Vocal Faculty of the Sverdlovsk Tchaikovsky Music College before continuing his training at the Ural State Mussorgsky Conservatory in the class of Professor Lilia Polyakova. He has taken part in masterclasses with Roza Tulyaganova, Alessandro Svab, Natalia Zavarzina and Ana Durlovski, and is a prizewinner of several international competitions, including: the II International Competition for Singers and Accompanists named after Hibla Gerzmava (Moscow, 2025; 2nd prize), the XXVII International Glinka Vocal Competition (Moscow, 2024; 3rd prize), the XV International Elena Obraztsova Competition (St Petersburg, 2024; 1st prize), the International Competition for Young Singers Orpheus (Chelyabinsk, 2023; 1st prize), and the I International Competition Magical Sounds of Prague (2021; 1st prize). In 2022 he also attended the International Summer School of the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music, specialising in classical voice (class of Ruzanna Lisitsian).

Ivan Borodulin has been a guest soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre since June 2023. He made his debut there in July 2023 as Oberon in Benjamin Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and has since performed further countertenor roles including Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Messiah, and the Angel in Rubinstein’s The Demon. In May 2025 he made his debut as the guslar Nezhata in Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Sadko on the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The role was prepared together with the répétiteur and coach Irina Soboleva. In March 2025 he also appeared as Bacchus in the semi-staged premiere of Giovanni Alberto Ristori’s opera Adriane at the Mariinsky Theatre.
