Ilya Shagalov
Ilya Shagalov is a Berlin-based video designer and multimedia artist working across opera, theatre, and contemporary performance. He began his artistic career at the Moscow Art Theatre, where he emerged as an innovative voice in video art. His work blends cinematic language, generative systems, and poetic dramaturgy, often developed in close collaboration with leading European directors and institutions. Recent projects include LEGENDE at the Ruhrtriennale, Der Schneesturm (Kirill Serebrennikov / Salzburger Festspiele & Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus), Hamlet (Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris), and Symphony of Shadows (Royal Festival Hall, London, with Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra). He has worked with major opera houses such as the Staatsoper Stuttgart, Hamburg State Opera, Vienna State Opera, and Zurich Opera House. As a stage director, he has developed original productions at the Théâtre des Deux Rives (Normandy) and Vene Teater (Estonia). His debut in cinema, the feature film Aquarium, won an award at the Koroche Film Festival.
