Evgeny Kulagin

Profile

Evgeny Kulagin was born in 1981 in the southern Ural region of Russia and graduated from the Academy of Arts and Culture in Chelyabinsk. In 2002, together with Ivan Estegneev, he co-founded the contemporary dance company Dialogue Dance in Kostroma, Russia, which quickly became a major hub for contemporary dance in the country. The company’s productions have won the national theatre award Golden Mask three times. Kulagin collaborates internationally with leading companies and choreographers from Russia, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, and South Africa.

Since 2014, he has worked as resident director and choreographer at the Gogol Centre in Moscow, where he staged productions including Shakespeare (2017), Two Rooms (2018), and Barocco (2018). From 2015 to 2022, he taught stage dance at the Moscow Film School and is the founder and director of the physical theatre laboratory DialogLab in Moscow.

Kulagin is also a co-author of several theatre and opera productions by Kirill Serebrennikov. Since 2022, he has been working at Thalia Theater Hamburg in Germany as a choreographer and resident director, where his projects have included Black Monk, Der Wiy, Barocco, Legende, and Closed Society. In collaboration with Kirill & Friends, he created the performance Apocalypse Tomorrow, which premiered at the Lessing Days Festival in Hamburg in 2023.
