Ladies and Gentlemen,

it is a great honor for me to become the Artistic Director of Staatsballett Berlin!

I have close ties to the ballet in Berlin since the late 1980’s and have observed the tremendous development of the Staatsballett Berlin ever since. I want to build up on this development and transform the Staatsballett Berlin.

As an Artistic Director with a clear focus on choreography, working with the dancers in the studio is extremely important to me, and this will take some time. Next to the experienced and well-known dancers of the company, new faces will be seen, too. Getting to know each other is the crucial basis for artistic processes. This is why it will take some time until I will create a new choreography for the Staatsballet Berlin. This creation will be staged at Staatsoper im Schiller Theater at the end of the season, i.e. from 14 May 2015 onwards, together with “Bella Figura” by Jiří Kylián and my own piece „White Darkness“.

I want to point out some aspects of our new program. The repertory of the great classics and the new productions of last season will be complemented by the reopening of “Giselle” by Patrice Bart at Staatsoper im Schiller Theater on 11 December 2014.

„Swan Lake“ and „Nutcracker“ are already in the repertory. From 13 February 2015 onwards, my own choreography of „Sleeping Beauty“ will join these milestones of classical ballet created by Peter I. Tschaikowsky.

Another ballet that is very important to me is my full-length Bach-Ballet, which was created for Weimar. I have called it “Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness”. We will dance this piece on the stage of the Komische Oper Berlin from 14 March 2015 onwards.

I also want to draw your attention to two guest companies. The guest performances of Béjart Ballet Lausanne, which we invited together with the Deutsche Oper Berlin to the Tempodrom from 17 October to 19 October 2014, will definitely be a highlight.

Maurice Béjart had a very close relationship with Berlin. The Staatsballett Berlin presented his masterpiece “Ring um den Ring” in October 2004, i.e. ten years ago. I myself studied at Béjart’s Mudra-School and so the circle closes when his ensemble will perform three of Béjart’s distinguished choreographies under the lead of Gil Roman: „Ce que l'amour me dit“, „Le Sacre du Printemps“, and „Boléro“. I am excited that Polina Semionova will give her debut in Boléro and will dance with the Staatsballett Berlin again on a regular basis.

The second company that I invited is also close to my heart: Kylworks. It is the newly founded ensemble of my friend Jiří Kylián. The performances will take place at Staatsoper im Schiller Theater on 27 March and 29 March 2015.

The last word belongs to our youth: I believe a close and good collaboration with the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin is very important in many regards. Berlin can only win if the Staatsballett Berlin and the Staatliche Ballettschule inspire each other. This is why the school gets the opportunity to present itself on the stage of the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater several times in March 2015. More is to follow.

I hope that we offer you a broad season with an interesting program, which on the one hand extends the classical repertory and on the other hand also presents contemporary styles, which have not been seen in Berlin for a long time.

Stay with us. I am looking forward to Berlin, I am looking forward to you!
