___________

La Sylphide, a ballet about the Scottish country squire James and his unfulfilled love for a sylph, expressed the ideal of the Romantic Era in Paris at its premiere in 1832. Artists and their audience reflected on the earthly opposing the supernatural, they were dreaming about foreign countries, higher spheres and faraway places. Thanks to the rigorous application of this zeitgeist, La Sylphide became a model: for the ‘ballet blanc’, for the meaning of the ballerina, who mysteriously rises from the floor, on the tips of her toes, ethereal and untouchable. As the accomplishment of this ideal, the libretto of La Sylphide was staged throughout Europe, including by the Danish choreographer August Bournonville. The Staatsballett Berlin will perform his 1836 version in the reconstruction by Frank Andersen. A product of the Royal Danish Ballet School, Andersen was Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet for many years and is one of the leading Bournonville specialists, whose works he stages all over the world.

August Bournonville, himself a fantastic dancer, ballet master and choreographer who learned his profession in Paris, developed his own ballet style, which is still espoused by the Royal Danish Ballet School to this day. To master a stupendous dance technique mainly aims at perfection in the artistic performance, which strives for natural expression in order to be perfect.
