La Sylphide – Rehearsal

Rehearsal of the romantic ballet by August Bournonville (1836), moderated in English by Frank Andersen

On March 1, 2019, La Sylphide celebrates its premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, a ballet about the Scottish country squire James and his unfulfilled love for a sylph, expressed the ideal of the Romantic Era in Paris at its premiere in 1832. Artists and their audience reflected on the earthly opposing the supernatural, they were dreaming about foreign countries, higher spheres and faraway places. Thanks to the rigorous application of this zeitgeist, La Sylphide became a model: for the ‘ballet blanc’, for the meaning of the ballerina, who mysteriously rises from the floor, on the tips of her toes, ethereal and untouchable.

On Monday, February 18, 2019, between 7-9pm, the State Ballett Berlin cordially invites you to witness a free rehearsal of the ballet, moderated in English by Frank Andersen. Apart from excerpts of Act II (accompanied on piano), Andersen will introduce the ballet, its historical significance and dance techniques. Tickets are available at the box offices of Deutsche Oper, Komische Oper, Staatsoper Unter den Linden and via the ticket link on this page.
