First premiere of new directorship: »Celis | Eyal« on 07 September 2018

Berlin, 29 August 2018 --- On 07 September 2018 the Staatsballett Berlin is having its first premiere under the new directorship of Johannes Öhman and Sasha Waltz from 2019/2020. The double bill »Celis | Eyal« at the Komische Oper Berlin presents the choreography »Your Passion is Pure Joy to Me« by Stijn Celis and »Half Life« by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar. Both choreographers are working with the dancers of the Staatsballett Berlin for the first time. 12 performances will be shown between September 2018 and January 2019.

Artistic Director Johannes Öhman is excited about the beginning of the season:  »I’m very much looking forward to this premiere and for the season to finally start. This evening combines two very different works: first Stijn Celis` choreography is based on great music by Nick Cave and Pierre Boulez and presents a sensible and subtle take on faith, and then Sharon Eyal’s piece is very abstract and androgynous but at the same time appealing and with a lot of energy.«

In 2009 Stijn Celis created »Your Passion is Pure Joy to Me« for the GöteborgOperans Danskompani. The music plays a central role in this work: besides dark and beautiful songs by Nick Cave appear cacophonic sound worlds by avant-garde composers Pierre Boulez and Krzystzof Penderecki. As the texts of the Australian musician Cave revolve around the question of how to live with traumatic experiences and keep faith in life, so do the seven dancers with their movements in space. After a career as a ballet dancer Stijn Celis began his choreographic work in 1993 and has staged over 40 ballets worldwide. Since the season 2014/2015 he has been director of the ballet company Saarländisches Staatstheater.

»This creation is monotonous with an angle. This creation can be good friends under your feet and bad people in your hands.« This is how choreographer Sharon Eyal describes her piece »Half Life« that she created in 2017 for the Royal Swedish Ballet. For 18 years the Israeli danced with the Batsheva Dance Company and started her choreographic work there as well. In 2013 she founded the L-E-V dance company together with Gai Behar, a DJ, techno musician and organizer of underground raves. Since then she has staged her work internationally in places or festivals like the Joyce Theatre (New York), Sadler’s Wells (London), Montpellier Danse and Julidans (Amsterdam). She has also created for companies like the Nederlans Dans Theater or the Royal Swedish Ballet.
