Staatsballett Berlin presents two world premieres by Alexander Ekman and Sharon Eyal with »Ekman | Eyal« on 8 December 2019

Berlin, 26 November 2019 --- On 8 December 2019 Staatsballett Berlin will celebrate two world premieres at Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The evening »Ekman | Eyal« with the two pieces »LIB« and »STRONG« contrasts new choreographies by two international stars of the contemporary dance scene: Alexander Ekman and Sharon Eyal.

Alexander Ekman is known for his fast-paced and effectively witty works. Sharon Eyal's choreographies can be described as vibrating experiments on the border between precision and excess. For the world premiere of »Ekman | Eyal« with the two creations »LIB« (Ekman) and »STRONG« (Eyal) both work together with the Staatsballett’s dancers for the first time.

»LIB yourself from the system, social norms or the habits you have been acquiring most of your life, realize that you don't need to fit in. LIB yourself to find your peace. A nice place to be. You dance with ease.«
Alexander Ekman

Alexander Ekman aims at creating works, which the majority can connect with, exploring topics everybody can relate to, which both entertain and question the audience. For the first time he is working with Staatsballett Berlin, creating a new work for the company’s female Principal Dancers and a male soloist. Having been fascinated by the creations of hair artist Charlie Le Mindu, especially his Chewbacca costumes which completely wrap their wearers in long hair, Alexander Ekman is working with him for the first time. His piece »LIB« (referring to ›liberation‹) would not be a work by Alexander Ekman, if it did not have a humorous and bizarre note.

»Mouth teeth pharynx. A creation starting from the inside and spilled beyond the sea, it’s a lot, it’s both troublesome and a relief. It’s delicate like a creature from the sea but with the shape of a human being with a soul, a big soul that beats and re-stuck in thin layers of pleasure. A creation that makes you want to touch, feel and smell. To close your eyes and dream.«
Sharon Eyal

The uncompromising Israeli choreographer Sharon Eyal has long since found a very personal, unmistakable artistic signature. Not only was she recently commissioned by Dior to contribute to one of the recent fashion shows, but is increasingly conquering European dance stages. In her first new creation in Berlin, she will now explore the emotional authenticity necessary for the interpretation of her pieces with the dancers of Staatsballett Berlin.
