J. Öhman and S. Waltz present the 2018/2019 season

Berlin, 26 February 2018 --- On Monday morning, 11.00 am, Johannes Öhman and Sasha Waltz presented the program of the 2018/2019 season, when Johannes Öhman starts as the new Director of the Staatsballett Berlin. Sasha Waltz will follow him to work in a Co-directorship from 2019/2020 on. The classical ballet productions “La Bayadère” by Alexej Ratmansky and “La Sylphide | Napoli” by Frank Andersen as well as the double or triple bills “Celis | Eyal”, “Van Dijk | Eyal” and “Balanchine | Forsythe | Siegal” will be the premieres of the season. Further news were the intensification of cooperation with the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin as the students will take part in three productions and will present their own performances at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Komische Oper Berlin. Yolanda Correa, Daniil Simkin, and Alejandro Virelles Gonzalez were presented as new principals to the company.

In the framework of the annual press conference of the Staatsballett Berlin, the upcoming Director Johannes Öhman presented the program of the 2018/2019 season together with Sasha Waltz, who will follow him to work in a Co-directorship from the 2019/2020 season onwards. Five premieres, including three creations and four repertory revivals are planned. Alexei Ratmansky, one of the leading choreographers working today and a sensitive connoisseur of the ballet tradition, will recreate “La Bayadère” in the spirit of Marius Petipa. Creations are commissioned by Anouk van Dijk, who will be staging her work in an evening at the Komische Oper Berlin, and by Richard Siegal, whose creation is a part of the evening “Balanchine | Forsythe | Siegal”. Frank Andersen is staging Auguste Bournonville’s “La Sylphide” and the third act of “Napoli”, which is famous for Bournonville’s insis¬tence on virtuosity in dance without compromising on inner expression. And two contemporary choreographers, Stijn Celis and Sharon Eyal, will each present one of their acclaimed choreographies in Berlin for the first time. Returning to the repertoire are “Swan Lake” by Patrice Bart, “The Nutcracker” by Medvedev/Burlaka and “Onegin” and “Romeo and Juliet” by John Cranko.

“We are honouring the past and we embrace the future. For both of us it is important to introduce and create new original works for the company as well as display the rich heritage of dance from its beginnings to the present day“, says Johannes Öhman about the long-term vision of the artistic curation in the Co-directorship.

In a move to foster new talent the cooperation with the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin will be intensified, with students performing in “La Bayadère”, “La Sylphide | Napoli” and “The Nutcracker”. In addition to the traditional stage programs at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, a second evening will be shown at the Komische Oper Berlin.

Finally, new members of the company were presented: Yolanda Correa from the Norwegian National Ballet, Daniil Simkin from the American Ballet Theatre and Alejandro Virelles Gonzalez from Bayerisches Staatsballett – all of whom are principals in their companies and will be at the Staatsballett Berlin – will be part of the ensemble from the beginning of the new season.
