Start of the 2018/2019 season: New artistic direction, ensemble grows from 84 to 93 members and the cast for September/October 2018

Berlin, 20 August 2018 - - - The Staatsballett Berlin begins the 2018/2019 season with the new Artistic Director Johannes Öhman (with Sasha Waltz from 2019/2020 on) as well as a larger ensemble of 93 dancers. Many of the new dancers will already be taking part in the performances during this September and October. The casting for the lead roles in these shows and the first premiere can be found online from tomorrow on. As a start of the new season the contemporary evening "Celis | Eyal" is having its premiere on 7 September 2018 at the Komische Oper Berlin.

The Staatsballett Berlin with its new Artistic Director Johannes Öhman (with Sasha Waltz from 2019/2020 on) has grown from 84 to 93 dancers to the start of this season including three principal dancers: Yolanda Correa, Daniil Simkin and Alejandro Virelles.
Yolanda Correa, born in Cuba, was a longtime member of the Cuban National Ballet and danced with the Norwegian National Ballet in Oslo from 2010 on, as well as with various companies as a guest soloist. In 2014, she was nominated for the "Benois de la Danse" after her debut as Tatjana in Crankos "Onegin". Her repertoire includes both classical and contemporary roles. In the first performance of "Swan Lake" she interprets the double role of Odette / Odile on the side of Marian Walter.
Daniil Simkin is known as a ballet star and began his professional career in 2006 as a demi-soloist at the Vienna State Ballet. In 2008 he became a soloist at the American Ballet Theater in New York City and in 2012 Simkin was promoted to principal dancer. Since then he has danced many lead roles in classic and neoclassical productions of the company’s repertoire, touring internationally in North and South America, Asia and the Middle East. In Berlin he will perform for the first time on 21 September 2018 as Lenski in "Onegin".
Alejandro Virelles, also Cuban, danced with the Cuban National Ballet, the Barcelona Ballet and the Boston Ballet. In 2014, he became a principal dancer at the English National Ballet and performed as a guest in Russia, the USA and South America. From 2017 on he was a principal dancer with the Bavarian State Ballet. As Prince Siegfried in "Swan Lake" he will dance with Polina Semionova on 19 September 2018 for the first time with the Staatsballett Berlin.

Furthermore, the company has been expanded by the soloists Sarah-Jane Brodbeck, Evelina Godunova, Vahe Martirosyan and Daniel Norgren-Jensen as well as demi-soloists Jenna Fakhoury, Ross Martinson and Jonny McMillan. Corps de ballet dancer Murilo de Oliveira is now promoted to demi-soloist. The new dancers can be seen on stage during the performances this September and October; the cast is online from tomorrow on.

The season kicks off with the opening festivities on 1 September 2018 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, to which the Staatsballett invites the audience to public rehearsals on the main stage as well as in the rehearsal rooms. The program at Deutsche Oper is continuing with "Swan Lake" that is performed again with full stage design and lighting.
