Alexei Ratmansky reconstructs »La Bayadère«

Berlin, 18 October 2018 --- On 4 November 2018, the Staatsballett Berlin is presenting the premiere of »La Bayadère« in a reconstruction by Alexei Ratmansky at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The internationally acclaimed choreographer is staging this ballet in a lavish production, where classical ballet can be enjoyed in its original form by grand master Marius Petipa and in an opulent setting. As cast for the premiere, Polina Semionova is performing as Nikia with Alejandro Virelles as Solor and Yolanda Correa as Gamsatti.

After staging several ballets of Petipa, Alexei Ratmansky is now working on »La Bayadère« with the Staatsballett Berlin. This ballet tells the story of the Indian temple dancerNikia’s love for the warrior Solor that is breaking all the rules. The choreographer is convinced of the genius of Marius Petipa, who is known as the father of classical ballet in the 19th century:

»I realize that the choreography of Petipa and how it’s written down is better than every so called traditional, passed on version. It’s more logical, musical, beautiful, elaboratein the details – just in the whole composition more refined andmakes total sense. Audiences familiar with versions of»La Bayadère« will be surprised«.

Based on historical notations, he reconstructs the piece authentically and complementsit wherenecessary. The elaborate production makes it possible to stage the Grand Ballet of 1877 in its original version, a stage spectacle with numerous divertissements, group performances, elements of Indian dances and the famous 32 dancers as shades incorporating the sphere of death in endless formations.

As scenery to this production, stage and costume designer Jérôme Kaplanhas createdan opulent and exotic Indian world. Hehas designeddetailed costumes for 164 parts, among others fakirs, slaves, sedan chair carriers and snake charmers. Besides amagnificenttemple and a palace that collapses at the end, a three-meter-high elephant on wheelsisnottobemissed.

The main roles can be seen in three different casts.
