Marian Walter to receive honorary title of »Berliner Kammertänzer«

Berlin, 04 December 2018 --- Marian Walter, Principal of the Staatsballett Berlin, will receive the honorary title of »Berliner Kammertänzer« on 15 December 2018. Dr. Torsten Wöhlert, State Secretary for Culture, will bestow the title after the performance of »La Bayadère« at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

Marian Walter, Principal of the Staatsballett Berlin, will be named »Berliner Kammertänzer« on 15 December 2018 after making his debut as Solor, the main male role in a reconstruction of »La Bayadère« by Alexei Ratmansky. Dr. Klaus Lederer, Senator for Culture and Europe, will be honouring an exceptional figure in the art world: »Marian Walter is very much a Berliner in terms of his training and his artistic home. His loyalty, modesty and dedication to his art are remarkable and distinguish him as a unique artist, so it’s a great honour for me to confer on him the title of »Berliner Kammertänzer«.

Marian Walter himself is thrilled at the distinction: »To receive this award – especially as a Berliner – is a great honour that I never would have expected. I’m very grateful for the artistic career I have had so far at the Staatsballett Berlin with highlights like the premiere of »Romeo and Juliette« alongside my wife Iana Salenko in 2012 and the role of Basil in Víctor Ullate’s »Don Quixote« in 2018. I’m looking forward to many more roles and challenges.«

The artist has impressed audiences at the highest international level with his outstanding technique combined with a relish for the acting métier. Passionate about his chosen art form, he sets store on achieving a sensitivity of interaction with his dance partners, teachers, choreographers and mentors when rehearsing a piece. As a classical dancer he is known primarily for embodying prince roles that have included Albrecht in »Giselle«, Siegfried in »Swan Lake«, the prince in »The Nutcracker« and Prince Désiré in »Sleeping Beauty«. Choreographer Maurice Béjart cast Walter as the ideal young Siegfried in »Ring um den Ring«, a role which he performed without an understudy for many years. Heinz Spoerli, too, cast him for the title role in his production of »Peer Gynt« on account of his personality, and recently Víctor Ullate recognized his special aptitude for the role of Basil in his »Don Quixote«. During the directorship of Nacho Duato Marian Walter matured as an artist, with Duato’s choreographic style requiring maximum softness and plasticity. In the process he broadened his repertoire and drew the attention of audiences and critics in neoclassical works such as »Castrati« by Nacho Duato and »Altro Canto« by Jean-Christophe Maillot.

Marian Walter grew up in Berlin and trained at the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin. After two years at the Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich he joined the ballet of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 2002. In 2004, when the Staatsballett Berlin was founded, he became Demi-Soloist followed by Soloist just one year later. Since 2010 he has performed a wide range of roles as Principal. In 2007 he received the »Deutscher Tanzpreis Zukunft« and in 2010 and 2016 was nominated for the Benois de la danse.
