Our New Year's Eve gala at the Deutsche Oper Berlin had to be cancelled unfortunately. However, this won't stop the Staatsballett Berlin dancers, presenting repertory highlights from classical to contemporary, from passionate to divine.
Despite the current situation, our company was fortunate enough to be able to stage a variety of productions before lockdown will put a stop to it once again. This we wanted to share with all of you. On World Ballet Day 2020, we therefore presented an excerpt from our gala programme FROM BERLIN WITH LOVE II:
The Grand Pas de Deux from LE CORSAIRE with Iana Salenko and Daniil Simkin as well as PAS DE QUATRE by Anton Dolin with Yolanda Correa, Evelina Godunova, Sarah Hees-Hochster and Aya Okumura.
We have reached the end of a more than unusual 19/20 season. However, we have a surprise for all dance enthusiasts out there. From July 3, 7pm CET, we'll stream FROM BERLIN WITH LOVE via YouTube!
Rehearsal with Polina Semionova, Alejandro Virelles as well as ballet mistress Christine Camillo and Xiaoqiong Huang on piano.
In March, just prior to all of Berlin's cultural institutions shutting down due to Corona, we went to the studio with Principal Dancer Ksenia Ovsyanick once more to record one last solo from Alexei Ratmansky's »La Bayadère«.
Rehearsal with choreographer Patrice Bart, principal dancers Yolanda Correa and Alejandro Virelles as well as ballet mistress Christine Camillo and Peter Hartwig on piano.
Rehearsal with choreographer Patrice Bart, Aurora Dickie and Alejandro Virelles as well as ballet mistress Christine Camillo and Peter Hartwig on piano.
On October 23, 2019, we participated in the global World Ballet Day programme. We screened classical and contemporary classes as well as rehearsals of »Plateau Effect« and »La Bayadère«.
Last year, nine choreographers contributed "pieces from isolation" to our contemporary programme LAB_WORKS COVID_19. Andreas Heise's DU BIST DIE RUHfeaturing Yolanda Correa, Arne-Christian Pelz (cello) and Alina Pronina (piano) was one of them, and we're excited to share it with you online.
We'll be absent from the opera stage this month, but we're more than happy to invite you backstage. Welcome to the Staatsballett Berlin!

A behind-the-scenes look at our contemporary evening LAB_WORKS COVID_19 featuring choreographies created in isolation.
We're proud to present DIORAMA, a dance film conceived and created during lockdown by artists from across the globe, from Denmark via the United States all the way to Berlin.
Through the medium of film, dance and music, DIORAMA creatively tackles the emotional consequences all of us are confronted with in 2020. Featuring our Principal Dancer Daniil Simkin, last season's Principal Guest Maria Kochetkova and music by the Kronos Quartet, DIORAMA is a labour of love, digitally bridging the distance that has become an integral part of all our daily lives.
Our contemporary evening LAB_WORKS COVID_19 featured nine chreographies which were created during lockdown this spring. In advance, Vivian Assal Koohnavard, who was amongst the nine choreographers, provided us with yet another one of her ideas for a dance video.
A collaborative choreography by our quarantined dancers initiated by Principal Dancer Ksenia Ovsyanick.
Our dancers can't wait to get back on the stages of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Staatsoper Berlin!
At the end of August, our dancers might be back on stage, however, it'll still take some time until our entire ensemble will be able to share the same space. So, we decided to take Emanuel Gat's SUNNY with music by Awir Leon and the entire cast to the park, keeping the necessary distance, of course - SUNNY in the Park!
Last year, the dance pedagogues of Tanz ist KLASSE! went to four Berlin-based schools to talk about »Grenzen«, which translates to »limits« but also implies »borders«, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall.
The participating children not only choreographed their own dances but also engaged in the medium of film. The outcome is the 60-minute dance film DistANCE documenting the children's dances and in doing so becoming a form of dance itself.
