A total of 25 dance journalists from all German-speaking countries voted for the Staatsballett Berlin Company of the Year. The annual survey by the magazine tanz thus confirms what viewers' voices and critics have already shown: the first season of the Staatsballett Berlin under new artistic direction was a success. In its statement, the jury emphasized not only the reorientation of the repertoire but also the impressive ensemble performance.

The artistic director duo Sasha Waltz and Johannes Öhman see the award as a tribute to the company's realignment: »We are very pleased with the award, which confirms our vision for Staatsballett Berlin after a difficult start. Last year we were able to show that it is possible to preserve the classical legacy while at the same time helping to shape the present and future of dance at a high level. Our thanks go to the Staatsballett team and above all to the dancers whose trust, commitment and hard work have made the past season a success.«

Staatsballett Berlin starts the 2019/20 season on 6 September with Plateau Effect by Jefta von Dinther at the Komische Oper Berlin. In addition, creations by Alexander Ekman and Sharon Eyal will be premiered. Successful productions such as Alexej Ratmansky's reconstruction of Petipa's La Bayadère and Patrice Bart’s Giselle will also return. Another highlight will be Sasha Waltz' first creation with the Staatsballett ensemble: SYM-PHONIE MMXX which will celebrate its premiere on 25 April 2020 at Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
