22/23 Season: Transitions

We're thrilled to announce our 2022/23 season programme. Three premieres and seven repertory productions showcase the ensemble's wide range and present iconic compositions for orchestra and chorus.

The first premiere of the season, EK | EKMAN, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 16 February 2023, presents a cross-generational mix of Swedish choreographers. For the first time, the work of Mats Ek, one of the leading choreographers of the 20th century, who has influenced stage dance since the 1980s, will find its way into the Berlin repertory. Christian Spuck, who will take over as the Staatsballett's artistic director from the 2023/24 season on, will stage his work MESSA DA REQUIEM at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 14 April 2023, combining dance with orchestral music, vocal soloists and chorus, a co-production with the Rundfunkchor Berlin. STRAWINSKY, a double bill which premieres at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden on 10 June 2023, comprises PETRUSHKA by Marco Goecke and THE RITE OF SPRING by Pina Bausch. Co-produced by the Pina Bausch Foundation, the Staatsballett ensemble will stage a piece by the legendary choreographer and founder of dance theatre for the first time.

Two productions by Patrice Bart, GISELLE and SWAN LAKE, are back on the programme, the latter celebrating its return to the venue it originally premiered at: the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In addition, Marcia Haydée's version of SLEEPING BEAUTY and ONEGIN by John Cranko promise great ballet artistry. DAWSONEKMAN | EYAL and LAB_WORKS | HALF LIFE present a wide variety of contemporary movement languages by established as well as up-and-coming choreographers. THE STUTTGART BALLETT travels to Berlin for guest performances at the Tempodrom whereas Tanz ist KLASSE!, the Staatsballett's education programme, will stage a performance at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Events such as BALLET CLASSES UP CLOSE, PRE-PREMIERE CONVERSATIONS and the discussion panel BALLET FOR FUTURE? WE HAVE TO TALK! add to the stage programme.

The challenging scores will be conducted by a total of 9 musical directors: Ido Arad, Nicholas Carter, Paul Connelly, Alevtina Ioffe, Dominic Limburg, Alondra de la Parra, Maria Seletskaja, Jonathan Stockhammer and Krzysztof Urbański.

Dr. Christiane Theobald, acting artistic director of the Staatsballett Berlin, is looking forward to a varied season:

"For the upcoming 22/23 season, I focussed my attention on the big scores, which have become milestones in the ballet canon thanks to their choreographers’ creations, showcasing and, at the same time, broadening the ensemble's wide range of skills. Also the question, "What is necessary to guide this art form into the future?" propels me to act. The Staatsballett Berlin embarked on a journey. I try to harness this energy as transitions are exciting moments of change, musically and artistically."

Ticket pre-sale for Friends and supporters of the Staatsballett Berlin and Tanzticket holders starts on April 22; regular ticket sales start on April 29.
