LA ESMERALDA – this is the story of the gypsy girl and Quasimodo as conceived by Victor Hugo and published by him in 1831 under the title "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". Shortly thereafter, Jules Perrot adapted the material for the ballet stage in a piece that went on to conquer all of Europe. The fact that in 1850 LA ESMERELDA also reached the ballet strongholds of Tsarist Russia is hardly surprising. The choreography by Marius Petipa remained in the repertoire of the Bolshoi Ballet right through till 1930, and has entered the annals of Russian ballet history as one of the most elaborate productions of all time.

In an impressive reconstruction of all the traditional and preserved elements, LA ESMERALDA was brought back to life: using historicised stage designs and costumes, this production fully recaptures the tastes of the era in which it was first created, and not only offers a veritable journey back through ballet history, but in combination with the brilliance of today’s c¬lassical dance technique also promises a very special ballet experience. The Staatsballett Berlin will dance its own version, drawing on that used by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.
