The window displays of the Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry store on New York´s Fifth Avenue inspired George Balanchine to create this ballet. The marvelous sparkle of rubies, emeralds, and diamonds provided him with associations that he then turned into this brilliant dance composition. Understatement and elegance are his trademarks, and they are unmistakable in this production, which challenges the virtuosity and soulfulness of the dancers.
