Static Time

Choreography by Nacho Duato

Nacho Duato’s first world premiere for the Staatsballett is entitled “Static Time”: Saying goodbye, memories, and questions of eternity are at the center of his choreography – subjects that will affect everyone at one point or another. For his creation, Duato has again worked with his longtime partners Angelina Atlagic and Jaffar Chalabi. The music in “Static Time” is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sergey Rachmaninov and Franz Schubert among others.

Click-Pause-Silence

Choreography by Jiří Kylián

The enthusiasm, which Jiří Kylián evokes with his choreographies, is based on the exceptional musicality, which all his pieces are permeated by. Created at the turn of the millennium, it is the architecture of music itself, which is center to his choreography “Click – Pause – Silence”. Using Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Prelude No. 24” from his “Well-tempered Piano”, Kylián – together with composer Dirk Haubrich - examines how the microscopically small elements of a composition – the notes, the musical themes and the miniature structures –create a miracle of emotions. How does the musical composition take shape? How is life breathed into it? – However, these questions are only of superficial interest to the choreographer. “Click – Pause – Silence” would not be a real Kylián if not the existential and at the same time very personal questions would play a major role, too: Who are we? Where are we coming from? And where are we going to?

White Darkness

Choreography by Nacho Duato

“White Darkness” represents a key piece in Nacho Duato’s oeuvre and has a very special place in his repertory. Created in 2001 for the Compania Nacional de Danza in Madrid, this choreography deals with the dismay when young people get caught in the darkness of drug abuse. For Nacho Duato this topic is very important as “White Darkness” can be seen as a requiem for his sister, who died of drugs. The choreography’s remarkable music was written by Karl Jenkins, presenting his “String quartet No.2” and “Adiemus Variations”. Despite of its clear visual language and the highly personal theme, Nacho Duato perceives his creation as a non-judgemental call for reflection on the impact that drugs have on both, the individual and the society.

We would like to inform people with health risk that a sudden and strong stroboscopic light and sound effect will be triggered during the performance of “Click-Pause-Silence”.

Season 2016/2017: On the following dates, all music will be from tape: 02., 03., 10. and 23. Juni 2017. On 03., 05. and 06. November 2016 the choreographies “Static Time” and “White Darkness” will be companied by the Staatskapelle Berlin.
