We thank Víctor Ullate and his team, Eduardo Lao (Staging), Roberta Guidi di Bagno (Sets and Costumes) and Marco Filibeck (Light Design),  that they have adapted the production and thus their concept to the current conditions of the house.

Cervantes’ tale of Don Quixote, tilter at windmills, – as relevant today as ever - is known as a key work of world literature; but it is also the title of one of the most famous classical ballets, even though the piece depicts only a few of the episodes contained in the novel. Nacho Duato commissioned his compatriot Víctor Ullate to compose a new version because he’s especially qualified to capture the nuances of Spanish elements in the classical movement vocabulary. Audiences and the dancers themselves can look forward to this interpretation with bated breath as it features many of the loveliest roles in classical ballet, dwells in particular on the love story between Kitri and Basilio and exudes Spanish atmosphere.

SYNOPSIS 

PROLOGUE In Don Quixote’s house

An old nobleman who lives in a village of La Mancha, is so obsessed with reading historic knight novels that he can no longer distinguish between imagination and reality. Despite the efforts of his housekeeper and his maidens to bring him back to reality, Don Quixote intends to go on an adventure together with his servant Sancho Pansa, whom he calls, without any doubt, his “squire”. Both leave the native village in search of the fantasies of the nobleman, whom the prospect of an encounter with his fictional lover, Doña Dulcinea, puts into joyous excitement.

FIRST ACT

On a village square in La Mancha

The daughter of the innkeeper, Kitri, is in love with the barber Basil, but her father Lorenzo is against this romance and tries to separate the lovers in order to marry his daughter to the rich and noble Camacho. In transit, the famous torero Espada, escorted by his picadores and his bride Mercedes, reaches the market place while Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa are also arriving. The crazy old man assumes the inn to be a castle.

Don Quixote believes to recognize Dulcinea in the person of Kitri, declaring his love to her. In the general confusion, Kitri dances with her fan and flees with Basil in an unobserved moment. When Lorenzo, Don Quixote and the spurned Camacho realize that the lovers escaped, they decide to follow them.

SECOND ACT

1.Scene – A night on a field with windmills

Gypsies settle their camp on a field, and Don Quixote, quite dazed by the previous events, mistakes their leader for a noble knight. The arrival of the newcomers is celebrated, amongst other things they are welcomed with a performance of a puppet theatre. The story about a clash of Christians and Moors sets Don Quixote so much in excitement, that he once again believes to see an appearance of Dulcinea, and furthermore challenges imaginary enemies to fight. Finally, the errant knight ends up between the wings of one of the windmills that he considers a demonic opponent.

2. Scene – A journey into the magic forest

Sancho Pansa takes the battered Don Quixote to a glade in the forest nearby. In this eery place the old man is pursued by delusions: famine, disease, war, nobility and death appear as fantastical figures to him, who carry him away leaving him in the night to his own fate. In this forest he dreams about Dulcinea, and in his imagination Amor and the mythological dryads appear to him, as the ideals of beauty and perfection from another world.

THIRD ACT

1. Scene – In the inn’s wine cellar

After this nocturnal adventure, all characters meet again in the large wine cellar of Lorenzo's tavern where the villagers spend a cheerful night with some passing gypsies. The prospect of an engagement of his daughter Kitri with Camacho puts Lorenzo into a happy state of excitement, and he urges their immediate marriage. Camacho arrives to ask for Kitri's hand, but shortly after, cunning Basil smartly mimes the desperate lover stabbing a knife into his heart. Deeply impressed by this spectacle of love and death, Don Quixote forces Lorenzo to agree to a wedding “post mortem” between the sly barber and the inconsolable Kitri. A clergyman is called to seal the sad covenant. When, however, Basil returns to the realm of the living, Camacho enrages, so that Don Quixote “forcefully” has to calm him down. The love of the young people finally wins, and Lorenzo gives the couple his blessings.

2. Scene – In the Garden of Camacho’s Castle

Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa gather themselves in the garden of Camacho's castle, where he finally acknowledges the true love between Kitri and Basil, so that the couple can seal their covenant with the consent of all and celebrate a wedding feast, taking the “Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance” in the midst of their dancing.

Learn more: There is a free introduction in German for the audience at the performance venue 45 minutes before each performance, except opening nights, guest performances, and special events. It is prepared and moderated by students of the Free University Berlin as part of the Ballet University program.

Family workshop „Don Quixote
To prepare the visit to the opera,  the participants are introduced to the plot as well as important characters, and rehearse short dance scenes.
